Lettering
Pain level
4/10 — Mild
Pain varies significantly by placement — ribs and hands hurt more than upper arms and calves, regardless of style.
History & technique
Tattooed text and lettering is one of the oldest forms of body marking, found across cultures from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe. In contemporary tattooing, lettering spans an enormous range: from precise single-needle script to bold graffiti-influenced block letters, calligraphy, and typographic display faces.
The technical demands of lettering are underestimated. Consistent line weight, balanced spacing, and clean edges require a steady hand and intimate knowledge of how ink spreads under skin over time. Many script pieces that look crisp fresh will blur within years if not executed with sufficient weight and spacing.
Text tattoos are among the most personal — they carry meaning the design alone cannot.
